Australian Group Races are the highest class of thoroughbred race in Australian racing. The most recognised group races in Australia are the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Golden slipper and WS Cox Plate, which are all Group 1 races.

Group races total over 540+ races each year which works out around 2-3% of total races held each season in Australia.

Group races are divided into 4 categories;
Group 1 - at least $250,000 prizemoney - 60+ races per season
Group 2 - at least $125,000 prizemoney - 80+ races per season
Group 3 - at least $75,000 prizemoney - 110+ races per season
Listed - at least $50,000 prizemoney - 280+ races per season

The Australian horse racing season runs from August to July each year and we have listed all the Group 1 and Group 2 races on the racing calendar.

The AJC Queen Elizabeth Stakes is a Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race run at Weight for Age , over a distance of 2,000 metres in April or May at Randwick Racecourse, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

The Queen Elizabeth Stakes is held on the very last race meeting of the Sydney Autumn Carnival at the end of April on Sydney Cup Day.

There are also three other Group 1 events conducted on this day including the Sydney Cup (3200m), All Aged Stakes (1400m) and the Champagne Stakes (1600m).

Since its inception in 1851, when Cossakc won following up his success with a second win the next year, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes has seen a number of length and name changes. Originally run over a gruelling distance of 24 furlongs (approximately 4800 metres), only the toughest and most dedicated stayers crossed the finish line first.

It began as a Principal race and was elevated to Group 1 status in 1980 when Iko took home the winnings.
